Manual Therapy

A physical treatment aimed at restoring mobility to the muscles and joints, manual therapy is a great way to get you feeling and moving better. As the basis to a “hands on” approach it can be a key ingredient to improving your pain while also improving your function.

As specialists in this area, Active Recovery provides expert manual therapy care through the only Fellowship trained orthopedic manual physical therapist in the area. Using techniques such as joint mobilization/manipulation, soft tissue massage and manipulation, myofascial release, and muscle energy the therapist can give you the guiding hand that improves pain and restores mobility with daily activity thus improving your quality and outlook on life.

Pre and Post Surgery Care

Be stronger, heal faster and get back to living life.

Hip and knee replacement surgeries are some of the most common operations performed in the U.S., with about 1 million completed each year. And each one of these patients share one thing in common: their desire to get back to the level of work, play and function they enjoyed before first experiencing joint pain. The physical therapy team here at Active Recovery has the right tools to help get you there.

Working with a physical therapist before these surgeries can vastly improve your strength, education and confidence going into such a major procedure. In turn, these “prehabilitation” efforts can improve the speed, success and cost of your rehabilitation experience post-surgery, getting you back to doing the things you love.

Common Surgeries

  • Total and partial joint replacements
  • Knee surgeries
  • Back or neck procedures
  • Shoulder/rotator cuff surgeries
  • Hip surgeries
  • Ligament or tendon reconstructions

If you face the possibility of surgery and wish to learn more about what physical therapy can do (pre- and post-surgery) to make you stronger, heal faster and get you back to life quickly, call us to schedule an evaluation. We’ll work with your physician to chart a path that’s right for you.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) and Craniofacial Pain

It is estimated in research that 40% of the $80+ billion dollars spent annually on treatment of chronic pain is due to craniofacial pain. Often a misunderstood and over-looked diagnosis, TMD is a painful and limiting impairment that affects the jaw and cervical spine. This painful condition can really affect your quality of life ranging from constant headaches and neck pain to painful chewing with eating. The catch with TMD is signs are far more common than symptoms, pain is not always the tell-tale sign.

Typical Signs of TMD

  • Popping in the jaw with opening/closing or chewing
  • Clicking
  • Noticing your jaw slides to one side or another when opening (asymmetrical opening)
  • Increasing difficulty of fitting bites into your mouth, having to take smaller bites
  • Often times grinding or clenching teeth leads to dysfunction

Typical Symptoms of TMD

  • Painful popping of clicking
  • Facial pain or ache that increases with chewing; especially tough or chewy foods
  • Headaches
  • Locking of the jaw

Here at Active Recovery we thoroughly evaluate your jaw’s ability to open, close and generally move. The function of the TMJ (jaw) is very closely related to our posture and cervical spine (neck). Through a personalized plan of care we are able to help improve postural awareness, joint and soft tissue mobility, function, and overall quality of life.

If jaw pain or headaches are limiting your enjoyment to eat or carry out your favorite activities call Active Recovery today to set up an in depth assessment and get you on the road to recovery.

Headaches

A very common complaint throughout our lives, headaches can have many different causes. Physical Therapy can play a crucial role in helping you with your headaches especially those that are driven by poor posture, tight muscles, stiff joints, or stress.

Even in situations where you have suffered with chronic headaches or migraines, PT can play a role in improving your quality of life. While migraines are generally derived from vascular issues they are often associated with stress, tension, and muscle guarding patterns that can facilitate “tension-type” headaches also known as cervicogenic headaches. These headaches typically respond very well to postural exercise, manual therapy, dry needling, and postural education.

Physical Therapy can play a key role with improving your quality of life and getting you back into action without the daily, constant headaches. Schedule an evaluation to see how Active Recovery can help get your headaches under control.
